Art protects, Video Hi8, A 1993
Art protects came into being in the course of the project “Art protects Rainforest” - visual artists were asked to process the letters of the term "Rainforest". In this video the organism of rainforest is confronted with an artificial organism that is to say the one of a computer software. The movement evolves from the momentum of a program designed to fit graphic drafts, which develops a completely self-contained colour composition to display an in advance defined image until the template is accomplished. The conception of Art Protects is no more then 10 drafts layered on top of each other within one "sheet" The movement itself is accomplished by the software, which arranges the drafts step by step. Thereby it generates innate, non-manipulable colour transitions from one letter to the next one. The - behalf actual standards - low speed of computer-processors at the beginning of the Nineties are an integral module of the artistic work. Variances of frequencies caused by filmic scanning from the computer monitor create irritation and nerviness and the recurrring term ART PROTECTS comes to be a question and a magic word at the same time.
Basement for the sound is the soundtrack of the movie “Tarzan in New York”. The inherent fracture within the title is symptomatic in regard of the border zone, that art protects touches constantly in search of the codes for the "organic itself". Where are the beginnings of “nature” and where does it end - and where does it die? The Tarzans on the audio track are gathering in a chorus of lament about "irrecoverable losses".
